Bloom: March theme
1st Place WinnerTaTonka FarmsTaTonka Farms’ four specialized greenhouses located off Highway 73 between Barkley Road and Highway 285 are open seasonally offering mountain-hardy plants. The next season opens in April, and owner Patty Dierksheide warns, “We sell out our spring crop by mid-July.” Spring features mountain-grown annuals and perennials that have been “temperature acclimated” for mountain weather. That way, when you bring home a hanging plant it’s ready for our temperature swings. To acclimate plants, TaTonka Farms heats its greenhouses during the day and cools them in the evenings. “Our plants are acclimated when you buy them and take them home,” Patty said. Here’s one of many testimonials: “If you live in the foothills and have not visited TaTonka Farms, you are missing out. This place is unbelievable. About six weeks ago, we bought two large hanging baskets. They had planted these about four weeks before, and they were just starting to show signs of life. Instead of taking them home with us, the owner of TaTonka Farms told us to leave them with her and she would nurture them in her greenhouse until late May. Well, we just picked them up, and we are so happy with the results. They will be the centerpiece of our outdoor landscaping. Best of all, at the end of the summer, we can return the baskets and the hangers and they will do it all again next year.” 10871 Highway 73, Conifer 80433303-816-4312 • www.tatonkafarms.com 2nd Place WinnerStems - A Flower ShopStems is a full-service floral boutique located in the Lakepoint Center overlooking Evergreen Lake.
